Yes, there are risks to both medical and surgical abortion. Medical abortion risks include the following:

  • The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion (this may require surgical treatment)
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach

Surgical abortion risks include the following:

  • Damage to the uterus or cervix
  • Uterine perforation (accidentally poking a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used)
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
  • Reaction to the drugs or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
  • Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure

To recover emotionally after an abortion, you may still need to grieve and work through your emotions to get the breakthrough you want. You are not alone. Most women need practical support throughout their recovery and healing process.

At Anderson Pregnancy Care, we can help. Check out our post-abortion support page to learn more.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best time to take a pregnancy test is at least one day after a missed period to get the most accurate results. At this point, your body has had time to produce detectable hCG levels.

Though a pregnancy test can detect hCG in urine as early as four days before your missed period, it is more sensitive in the days after. You can receive a more accurate result from the test by waiting longer.
