What is Abortion Like?

Abortion is a serious medical decision that works to terminate an existing pregnancy. There are two main types of abortion: medical abortion (the abortion pill) and surgical abortion.

With medical abortion, mifepristone is taken first, which ends a pregnancy. Second, misoprostol is taken, causing the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and tissue from the uterus and out of the body. Medical abortion drugs cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, as well as other side effects.

Surgical abortion is a bit more invasive. Surgical abortion involves drugs, suctioning, and/or surgical tools to end a pregnancy. Some side effects of this procedure include spotting or light bleeding and mild cramping. There are also risks to consider, as they can be severe.

What is Adoption Like?

Adoption is the legal process in which an individual or couple assumes the parental rights and responsibilities of a child. As the birth mother, you can choose from three adoption options:

  • Open Adoption: With open adoption, you and the adoptive family decide on what type of relationship you want and how your communication and visits are carried out. You will exchange identifying information like full names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • Closed Adoption: Closed adoption is a great fit if you desire more privacy and confidentiality. With a closed adoption, all identifying information is concealed, and an adoption agency would choose a family based on the birth mother’s desires.
  • Semi-Open Adoption: A semi-open adoption allows contact between the adoptive family and the birth mother, but it’s all done through an adoption agency or other third party. It’s also more private than an open adoption, as only limited information is exchanged.

Before Deciding About Abortion or Adoption

There are a couple of steps to protect your health before moving forward with your pregnancy decision. It’s important to note that medical abortion is only recommended for women through 10 weeks of gestation.

An ultrasound is needed not only to confirm how far along you are, but also to alert you to any pregnancy complications, such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

Start getting clarity with free medical-grade pregnancy testing with our staff at Anderson Pregnancy Care. If you receive positive testing, we can also offer you a limited, first-trimester OB ultrasound.
