How could this happen to me? Am I really pregnant right now?

You could have a million questions rushing through your mind as you face a potential unexpected pregnancy. You may have more questions, including:

  • What will my partner think?
  • What will my family think of me?
  • How can I financially support a child right now?
  • What about adoption and parenting?
  • What are the risks of abortion?
  • Can I continue to go to school/college?

It’s important to do your best to remain calm and be sure of your pregnancy test results before thinking too far ahead. Try your best to take one day at a time, and be sure to get insight from a medical professional before moving forward with a pregnancy decision.

Is My Pregnancy Test Right?

It can be easy to feel confused about your pregnancy test results as you navigate all the emotions you’re experiencing. Or maybe you experience irregular periods and think it could be a false alarm.

When To Take A Pregnancy Test

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best time to take a pregnancy test is at least one day after a missed period to get the most accurate results. At this time, your body has time to produce detectable levels of hCG, a hormone present during pregnancy.

Though a pregnancy test can detect hCG in urine as early as four days before your missed period, it is more sensitive in the days after. You can receive a more accurate result from the test by waiting longer.

Irregular Periods

If you experience irregular periods, do you have months where you don’t know when your next period will begin? This can make confirming a potential pregnancy confusing. The FDA shares that most pregnancy tests can detect the pregnancy hormone, hCG, in urine 12-15 days after ovulation for women with 28-day cycles.

For the most accurate results with irregular periods, wait 36 days after your last menstrual period or four weeks after you had sex to take a pregnancy test.
