Why An Ultrasound Matters

1. Confirm How Far Along You Are 

An ultrasound will confirm how long you have been pregnant, as the FDA only recommends medical abortion for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound will help determine what pregnancy options you’re eligible for and what your next steps are.

2. Determine the Viability of Your Pregnancy

You will want to determine your pregnancy’s viability (whether it has a heartbeat and is progressing) to make a clear decision. 

Around 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. Ultrasound is needed to confirm if your pregnancy has a heartbeat and if there are possible complications that require medical attention. 

3. Confirm the Location of Your Pregnancy

Lastly, confirm the location of your pregnancy with an ultrasound. The location of your pregnancy means whether it is growing within your uterus or not. 

Some women may experience an ectopic pregnancy, which is a nonviable pregnancy that grows outside of the uterus and requires immediate medical treatment. If you experience an ectopic pregnancy, you need a different procedure than an elective abortion.
