What Is A Medical Abortion?

If you’re thinking about a medical abortion, you probably have questions about how it works, what happens during the process, and whether it’s the right choice for you. That’s completely normal—this is an important decision, and having accurate information matters for your health and peace of mind.

At Anderson Pregnancy Care, we don’t provide or refer for abortions, but we do offer free and confidential medical services that can help you understand your options and make an informed decision.

How Medical Abortion Works

Medical abortion, also called the abortion pill, is a two-step process that uses two different drugs to end an early pregnancy. It is FDA-approved for use only through 10 weeks of pregnancy.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed for a pregnancy to continue. Without it, the pregnancy stops progressing.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to expel the baby through contractions. This process usually causes heavy bleeding and cramping, often more intense than a typical period.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

In addition to bleeding and cramping, women who choose a medical abortion may experience side effects like nausea or vomiting, headaches, diarrhea, weakness or dizziness, and fever or chills.

In addition to the side effects, there are also medical risks to be aware of, including an incomplete abortion, which may require a surgical procedure, heavy or prolonged bleeding, and a fever that may signal a severe infection that can lead to other complications.

Understanding these side effects and risks can help you carefully evaluate your options and make a choice based on protecting your health and safety.

Why an Ultrasound Matters

Before making a decision about a medical abortion, an ultrasound is an essential first step. A limited OB ultrasound can provide key information about your pregnancy, including:

  • Gestational age: Medical abortion is only approved through the first 10 weeks. An ultrasound can confirm how far along you are.
  • Viability: It can show if the pregnancy is developing or if your body has naturally miscarried, in which case a medical abortion would not be the correct treatment.
  • Location: It can rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which happens outside the uterus and requires immediate medical treatment.

At Anderson Pregnancy Care, we provide free limited ultrasounds so you can get the answers you need before deciding.
