What Home Pregnancy Tests Actually Measure

Home tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. A pregnancy test is generally reliable, but a positive result has limits.

Several factors can affect accuracy:

• Testing too early. The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting at least one to two days after a missed period. Testing before that point increases the chance of an inaccurate result.
• Time of day. hCG is most concentrated in first-morning urine. Testing later in the day can dilute the sample and affect accuracy.
• Recent pregnancy loss. After a miscarriage or very early pregnancy loss, hCG can remain in your body temporarily. This can show as a positive result even when a pregnancy is no longer present.
• Certain medical factors. Fertility medications that contain hCG, some ovarian conditions, and, in rare cases, hormonal changes, can also affect results.

What Comes After a Positive Test

If the result is accurate, knowing you’re pregnant is only part of the picture. An ultrasound provides the details that actually shape your options:

• Whether the pregnancy is developing normally
• How far along you are
• Whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, ruling out an ectopic pregnancy, which is a medical emergency
